Open Enrollment Period (OEP)

The Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period (OEP) runs January 1 to March 31 each year. It lets someone already enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan make one change — switch to a different MA plan, or return to Original Medicare and add a Part D plan.

The MA OEP applies only to people already in a Medicare Advantage plan as of January 1, and allows a single change. It's where much of the post-AEP cleanup and switching happens.

Note: “OEP” can also refer to the Medigap Open Enrollment Period — a separate, one-time six-month window that begins when a person is 65 or older and enrolled in Medicare Part B, during which they can buy any Medicare Supplement policy without medical underwriting.
